How to install boat decking?
For more detailed instructions or videos, PlasDECK provides step-by-step guides and resources on our website.
To install PlasDECK synthetic boat decking, you’ll need to follow several steps that ensure a proper fit and long-lasting result:
- Preparation
- Clean the surface: Start by sanding any uneven or raised areas on your boat’s deck, especially around non-skid sections. After sanding, clean the deck thoroughly using denatured alcohol to remove dust and debris.
- Remove hardware: Take off any hardware like winches or hatches that you want the deck to go under. Visualize your decking layout, whether it’s a traditional teak-style deck with margin boards or a modern New York style.
- Decking style: Decide on the style (e.g., traditional or modern) before starting to lay the decking.
- Tools & Materials
- Tools required: These include a notched trowel for spreading adhesive, a roller to ensure proper bonding, vinyl shears for cutting the PlasDECK, and sanding tools for smoothing edges.
- Adhesive and caulk: Use Bostik Hybrid Moisture Cure adhesive/sealant, recommended specifically for PlasDECK. Black adhesive works well for seams, while white is good for areas around the margins.
- Installation
- Laying the PlasDECK: After warming the synthetic teak panels in the sun (to make them more flexible), apply the adhesive with a notched trowel. Place the decking panels and use a roller to ensure they bond evenly with the surface.
- Cutting and Fitting: For a custom fit, you’ll cut the panels to match your boat’s layout. Sharp tools like vinyl shears and spatula knives are essential for precision cutting.
- Finishing
- Finishing touches: Once the panels are set, use sandpaper to smooth out the edges and ensure a clean finish. Caulk any remaining seams and finish by wiping the deck with denatured alcohol.
